Summaries of selected instances of non-USA dog bite fatalities

  1. Wales dog bite fatality - February 2009
    Two dogs, a female Jack Russell terrier, and a male Staffordshire bull terrier, fatally mauled a three-month-old infant by inflicting severe neck bite injuries, according to the news source Scotsman.com. The child was left by the parents with the grandmother who owned the dogs, and the infant had visited on previous occasions. Apparently the grandmother left the child sleeping in a basket on the floor, and this is when the attack happened.
  2. Thailand dog bite fatality - April 2009
    Three pit bulls who were used to guard a family rice mill, killed a thirty-seven year-old lady who want to release the dogs from their compound. The rice mill was owned by the victim's family. When the victim didn't return home, family members when looking for her and found her bloodied body covered in dog bites, according to the the Bangkok Post in a story dated April 5, 2009. Family members who went looking for the victim were also attacked by the dogs and injured. Two of the dogs were shot and killed by the victim's husband. According to the records kept by this author, this is on ony the second dog bite fatality in Thailand since 2002.
  3. Kazakhstan dog bite fatality- July 2009
    A 14-year-old teenager died as a result of an attack in south Kazakhstan.
  4. Spain dog bite fatality- August 2009
    Victim was a 64-year-old man fatally mauled by an Akita guard dog in Elche on commercial property.
  5. Bulgaria dog bite fatality - October 2009
    A pack of dogs (number of dogs involved in the attack not specified in news report) attacked and fatally wounded a six-year-old child walking to the grocery store in the Bulgarian village of Sushevo. The dogs were maintained in the yard of a nearby resident of the village, and apparently these dogs had a history of escaping from the property, and harassing other people and animals. News report indicated that the owner of the dogs maintained approximately a dozen dogs in her backyard. The report also indicated that these particular group of dogs had attacked the victim previously prior to incident that led to her death, but she survived that attack. Manslaughter charges have been brought against the owner.
  6. England dog bite fatality - December 2009
    A pitbull type dog mauled to death a four year old child in the Liverpool home of his grandmother who was babysitting for the boy. The dog was owned by the grandmother, and there were reports prior to the incident about the dangerous nature of this dog. The grandmother attempted to stop the attack on her grandson and was bitten herself and subsequently hospitalized for treatment of her injuries.
  7. South Africa dog bite fatality - January 2010
    A 60-year-old lady was mauled by a great Dane and a Boerboel who had escaped from a neighbor's yard. In Plett, South Africa which is a rural section, and apparently an area area where many landowners have aggressive dogs for protection.

  9. Solvenia dog bite fatality - February 2010
    A physician who fiercely battled governmental authorities to have his beloved three bull mastiffs returned to him was killed in Slavonia in February 2010 by these very same dogs he saved from destruction. Previously these dogs were declared dangerous.Within two weeks after the dogs were returned to the physician, the dogs attacked and killed him, which in turn sparked national controversy in Slavonia. The 52-year-old victim was mauled to death in his backyard. It was not clear how many dogs were involved in the attack. When police officers arrived on the scene, they shot and killed one of the dogs, and the other two were euthanized. News of this fatality prompted calls for the resignation of the agricultural Minister for allowing the dogs to be returned to the victim.
  10. Austria dog bite fatality - February 2010
    Two Rottweiler guard dogs have mauled a 78-year-old lady to death at her place of business outside Vienna. The woman's body was discovered when a caretaker arrived at the family carpentry business to feed the dogs. The victim's body was covered with bite wounds and scratch marks.
  11. Russia  dog bite fatality - November 2010
    Two pit bull type dogs escaped from a neighbor's yard in southern Russia and entered a nearby yard and severely attacked and 85-year-old lady, who died 2 days later in hospital.
